Roof Replacement

Roof Replacement & Installation for Minnesota Homes

Replacing a roof involves more than installing new shingles. The finished shingles are only the outer layer of a system that also depends on sound decking, proper underlayment, flashing, ventilation, and carefully detailed transitions around the roof. We help White Bear Lake homeowners evaluate the existing roof, understand what may need attention underneath it, and plan a replacement designed around the home and the weather conditions it will face.

What to Consider When Replacing Your Roof

  • Look Beyond the Shingles Shingle wear is only one part of the decision. Repeated leaks, soft or damaged decking, deteriorated flashing, ventilation problems, and widespread storm damage can all affect whether continued repairs still make sense.
  • See What the Old Roof Was Hiding Once the existing roofing is removed, the roof deck can be inspected more closely. Water-damaged, deteriorated, or weakened areas should be addressed before they are covered by the new roofing system.
  • Protect Eaves, Valleys & Vulnerable Areas Roof edges, valleys, wall intersections, chimneys, vents, and other penetrations handle concentrated water flow or create natural transition points. Underlayment, flashing, and water protection in these areas play an important role beneath the finished shingles.
  • Make Ventilation Part of the Roof System Roofing and attic ventilation work together. Proper intake and exhaust ventilation can help manage heat and moisture inside the attic, which is especially important through Minnesota's hot summers and freezing winters.
  • Choose Shingles for More Than Appearance Color and style matter, but homeowners should also consider wind ratings, durability, impact resistance, manufacturer requirements, warranty options, and how a shingle is expected to perform through hail, snow, ice, and temperature changes.
  • Think About the Roof as Part of the Exterior Roofing connects with gutters, fascia, soffits, siding, chimneys, vents, and other exterior details. Looking at those transitions during replacement can help the finished roof work cleanly with the rest of the home instead of treating each component separately.
Roof Repair

Roof Repair for Leaks, Damage & Everyday Wear

Roof problems are not always as simple as replacing the damaged piece you can see. Water can travel beneath roofing materials before showing up inside the home, wind can affect shingles without removing them completely, and leaks often begin where different roof surfaces or materials meet. We inspect the surrounding roofing system as well as the visible problem so we can determine what failed, how far the damage extends, and whether a focused repair is still a practical solution.

Roof Problems Worth Addressing Early

  • Trace Leaks Back to the Source The place where water appears inside the home is not always directly below the roof problem. Water can move along decking, framing, or other surfaces before becoming visible, so finding the actual entry point matters before making a repair.
  • Damaged Shingles Can Affect Nearby Areas Missing, cracked, lifted, or creased shingles can expose the layers below and leave surrounding shingles more vulnerable to wind and water. The condition of the nearby roofing should be considered along with the visibly damaged piece.
  • Check Flashing & Roof Penetrations Chimneys, vents, skylights, plumbing penetrations, and roof-to-wall connections interrupt the shingle surface and depend on properly detailed flashing. These transition points are common places to investigate when a roof develops a leak.
  • Pay Attention to Valleys, Edges & Transitions Valleys carry large amounts of water, while roof edges and intersections between different roof sections are exposed to wind, runoff, snow, and ice. Problems in these areas can involve more than the shingles visible on the surface.
  • Storm Damage Is Not Always Obvious Hail can leave impact damage without creating an immediate leak, while strong winds can lift, loosen, crease, or remove shingles. Checking the surrounding roof after severe weather can help determine whether the problem is truly isolated.
  • Know When Another Repair Stops Making Sense A targeted repair can make sense when the surrounding roof is still performing well. If shingles are brittle, leaks keep returning, matching materials are difficult to find, or wear is widespread, continued repairs may become less practical than planning for replacement.

Roofing FAQs

Common Questions About Roof Repair & Replacement

Roofing problems aren’t always easy to evaluate from the ground. Here are answers to some of the most common questions homeowners have when deciding whether to repair, replace, or have their roof professionally inspected.

How do I know if I need a roof repair or a full replacement?

A repair may make sense when damage is limited to a small area and the rest of the roof is still in good condition. Replacement becomes more likely when there is widespread shingle deterioration, repeated leaking, extensive storm damage, or an older roofing system with problems in several areas. A roof inspection is usually the best way to compare the two options.

How much does a roof replacement cost in White Bear Lake, MN?

Roof replacement costs vary based on the size and pitch of the roof, roofing material, number of layers being removed, roof complexity, and whether damaged decking or other components need to be addressed. Because every home is different, an inspection and project-specific estimate will provide a much more useful number than a general price range.

How long does it take to replace a roof?

Many residential roof replacements can be completed relatively quickly, but the exact timeline depends on roof size, complexity, weather, materials, and whether additional repairs are discovered after the existing roofing is removed. We’ll review the expected schedule with you before work begins.

What are the signs that my roof needs repair?

Common warning signs include missing or damaged shingles, water stains on ceilings or walls, visible leaks, damaged flashing, shingles collecting in gutters or around the property, and problems that appear after strong winds or hail. Some roof damage is difficult to see from the ground, so an inspection can help when you’re unsure.

Should I have my roof inspected after a hailstorm?

It can be a good idea, particularly after a storm that produced large hail or strong winds. Hail can bruise or damage asphalt shingles without creating an immediate leak, while wind can loosen shingles and flashing. An inspection can identify possible storm damage before it turns into water intrusion.

What roofing materials work well for Minnesota homes?

Asphalt shingles are a common choice for Minnesota homes because they are available in a wide range of styles and are designed for residential roofing applications. When comparing shingles, homeowners should consider durability, wind ratings, appearance, manufacturer specifications, and how the product fits their particular home and budget.

Can a leaking roof be repaired without replacing the whole roof?

Often, yes. If a leak is caused by a localized issue such as damaged shingles, flashing, or a roof penetration and the rest of the roofing system is still in good condition, a targeted repair may solve the problem. Widespread deterioration or multiple recurring leaks may make replacement a better long-term option.

Can roofs be repaired during a Minnesota winter?

Some roofing repairs can be completed during colder weather, particularly when work is necessary to stop active water intrusion or prevent additional damage. Temperature, snow, ice, material requirements, and safety conditions all affect what can reasonably be completed. The roof should be evaluated before determining the best approach.

Does homeowners insurance cover hail or storm damage to a roof?

Homeowners insurance may cover certain types of sudden storm damage, but coverage depends on the individual policy, cause of damage, condition of the roof, deductible, and the insurance carrier’s assessment. A roofing contractor can inspect and document visible damage, but your insurance company ultimately determines what is covered under your policy.

If this is the only sentence you read, Saints Exteriors is an exceptional company. Their entire team, from the office, to owner Marcel, to the install staff are professional, timely, transparent and responsive. Marcel really fought for us when we had multiple storm damage issues from July 2025. The install team from roofing to gutters, to drywall repair was top notch and great at their craft. Repairs were quick and fair priced. They treat you like a valued customer and don't push you into upgrades or things you don't need. They care about their neighbors (I'm in White Bear too) and value their community at large. I can't envision going to another contractor for the services they provide. I'm including a picture of the tree that caused damage, plus a picture of my new roof

This is the second time around we are working with Marcel. What an excellent experience from start to finish! I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I worked with him previously 3 years ago and now, after recent hail storm this late summer in 2025. I dreaded going through the insurance hassles again. We worked with various contractors in the past for other projects but Marcel is the top person I will go back to for without hesitation. He is very dependable, accessible, friendly, true to his word and very professional. He explained every step in detail and kept us updated timely. He personally supervised the work and gave us budget friendly and top of the line options. He took initiative to talk to insurance company representatives and made this process very smooth. He made us feel very valued partners in this process although he did all heavy lifting. I will recommend him and his team without hesitation to anyone.

We HIGHLY recommend Saints Exteriors! We had damage to our roof and siding from a storm last summer. We felt so fortunate to have Marcel and Saints Exteriors on our side! Our insurance company came up with all kinds of ridiculous solutions (paint our vinyl siding was just one of them). Marcel fought for us and thanks to all his hard work we are IN LOVE with how our house came out and appreciated Marcel holding our hand through the process as well as dealing directly with our insurance. He follows through on everything and is very thorough! His roofing & siding crews were great to work with and did a top-notch job!!

I am writing this to thank you and your workforce for what turned out to be a wonderful experience. I met Santino and Marcel the day after we had a most extreme hail storm. I am a senior and worked in construction myself for 15 years. I know how easily people can be taken advantage of. I took a risk with Santino, and it turned out, this is a company you’ll surely want to put your trust in. Santino was ALWAYS available when I had a question or needed help. And the workmanship was first rate. I could not recommend SAINTS Exteriors more highly. Thank you guys.

After our home was damaged in a hail storm. I reached out to a couple of contractors I knew personally and they were interested until I asked if they could install egress windows in our bedrooms to bring the house up to code while replacing the siding. (Not an easy job in an old house) I met Jason at the neighbors when he had stopped in to check on a job they had completed a couple of weeks earlier to see if there was anything they saw that needed attention. He didn't blink an eye when I asked about windows and removing some brick from the front of the house along with replacing the siding. He was on it and brought in Marcel to help with questions we had and the complex job we were asking for. Saying their attention to detail was amazing is an understatement. These guys are capable of taking on jobs others shy away from. Our house looks awesome and the detail they provided in every aspect made us very happy. We will enjoy our house for years to come with the new look they provided
